Mary Shelley
Early Life and Influences
Mary Shelley was more than just the author of one of the most famous horror stories of all time, Frankenstein.
She was a trailblazing writer, a feminist, and a woman who defied societal expectations. Shelley was born in 1797 to political philosopher William Godwin and feminist writer Mary Wollstonecraft.
Unfortunately, her mother died shortly after giving birth, and Shelley was raised by her father and stepmother.
Despite her unconventional upbringing, Shelley received an education that was rare for girls at the time.
She read extensively and was influenced by her father's radical ideas. In 1814, at the age of 17, she met Percy Bysshe Shelley, a young poet who would become her husband.
Their relationship was scandalous, as Percy was already married and the two began an affair.

Frankenstein and Literary Success
In 1816, the couple traveled to Switzerland, where they spent time with fellow writers, including Lord Byron.
It was during this trip that Mary Shelley came up with the idea for her masterpiece, Frankenstein. The novel was published anonymously in 1818 and was an instant success.
Frankenstein tells the story of Victor Frankenstein, a scientist who creates a living being from dead body parts.
The creature, who is abandoned by his creator, is rejected by society and ultimately seeks revenge.
The novel explores themes of isolation, loneliness, and the dangers of scientific ambition.
Personal Tragedies and Later Life
Despite her literary success, Mary Shelley's life was marked by personal tragedies.
She suffered the loss of several children and her husband, who drowned in a boating accident in 1822.
In the years that followed, Shelley continued to write and publish, but never achieved the same level of success as she did with Frankenstein.
Mary Shelley died in 1851 at the age of 53, but her legacy lived on.
She paved the way for other female writers and continues to be celebrated today as a feminist icon and literary trailblazer.
